Single Copy - Scan Based Trading

Accounting for net sales obtained through SBT technology.

There are two ways to account for net sales from retailers using scan based trading (SBT) technology:

  1. If traditional in and out reports are used to physically account for the draw and returns, a newspaper may claim the net (draw - returns) as paid circulation.
  2. If the newspaper relies on the SBT results to determine the net sale, an SBT report may be used. There is no allowance for any SBT inaccuracies.

The newspaper industry continually evaluates if any specific guidelines should be established given some of the inconsistencies involved in SBT reporting. This subject is reviewed at each AAM board meeting and, therefore, newspaper members should continue providing feedback to AAM staff, committee members and directors.
