Business/Traveler Hotel Distribution

Find out if your hotel distribution or employer purchased copies qualify as paid circulation.

Hotel Distribution

There are two types of hotel distribution included as business/traveler circulation

  • Guest Refund
  • Room/Lobby Copies

Note: Copies purchased directly by guests (i.e. at a gift shop) are eligible as paid single copy. Copies purchased by a third party and distributed at hotels are eligible as qualified retail/business.

Guest Refund

Copies paid for by hotel guests as part of their room cost are eligible as paid business/traveler hotel distribution – guest refund if the following requirements are met:

  • The newspaper is delivered to the guest’s room.
  • The newspaper is the current day’s issue.
  • At registration, the guest is informed a newspaper is included with the room charge and may be declined for a refund or credit. See AAM Rule C 3.4 Business/Traveler Copies.
    • The notice occurs on either the registration form, key cardholder, or a sticker affixed to the top of each day's newspaper. Signs, posters or tent cards, at the front desk or in the room, aren't sufficient notification. See below for acceptable examples.
    • The notice that provides an option for the guest to decline the newspaper states the value and offers a refund of the stated value if the newspaper is declined.
    • The refund instructions are clear and simple.
    • The refund amount is at least one cent, net of all considerations. See AAM Rule C 1.1 Paid Circulation Defined.
  • Copies declined and refunded are considered unsold copies and excluded from paid circulation.
