How Hurricanes May Impact Circulation

September 6, 2017

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma may cause delivery issues for some periodicals. Here’s what you need to know if your issues are not delivered.

Janice Unrath, Vice President, Auditing

Several clients have expressed concerns about delivery issues in areas impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The United States Postal Service has posted about their limited service restrictions in and around the affected ZIP codes on its website.

Magazines and business publications may temporarily suspend service to subscribers who live in areas where delivery is not possible without impacting AAM circulation claims.  AAM does not take exception to this suspension of service or the resulting extension of subscriber accounts once service is reinstated.  Copies held by the post office or publisher until service resumes will not count as back copies if delivered late.

If the copies are not delivered, they cannot be included on publisher’s statements. Instead, you may choose to include the following disclosure:

Due to the U.S. Postal Service suspension of acceptance/delivery of periodical copies in the wake of Hurricane [Harvey or Irma], X number of copies were not delivered. These copies have not been included in the circulation claims throughout this report.

If you have any questions about how this may impact your circulation or wish to discuss a specific situation, please contact your audit manager.
